Moving into a new apartment can make your head spin. Take a piece of paper and a pen and write down everything you need and we will give you some suggestions on what you might have forgotten.

Bedroom

A mattress should be one of the first items you buy after signing an apartment lease. Yes, it would be nice to sleep on the floor, but life gets crazy busy, and that first night on the floor can easily turn into months before you find time to buy a mattress. Read on for tips on choosing a new mattress. And don’t forget all the things you need to make your bed cozy – sheets, comforter, pillows, etc.

Your bed, dresser and nightstand can be bought as part of a set or you can mix and match them according to your preferences. Your bedroom can take on a whole new look depending on the style you choose, so start browsing early.

When pointing out home furnishings, including bedrooms, it’s important to note that this should also include blinds and curtains, so it’s best to buy these in advance – it’s not fun to be stuck without anything covering your bedroom windows. Finally, invest in some hangers before you move. The sooner you can unpack and put away your clothes, the sooner your first apartment will feel like home.

In summary, for your bedroom you will need things such as:

  • a mattress,
  • a bed, a dresser, a nightstand,
  • a set of bedding,
  • a comforter,
  • a mattress topper or mattress protector,
  • pillows,
  • window curtains,
  • clothes hangers.

Kitchen

Every home is different, so deciding whether you need a full kitchen table and chairs or just bar hockers is up to you. But eventually you’ll want to sit somewhere other than the couch to eat dinner.

You can stick with paper plates and cups until you buy a full set of dishes, but we recommend buying a few of them before you move in. That way, if it takes you a few weeks to choose the cookware you like, you’ll at least have the essentials. Using real cookware is also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint.

The most important things for your kitchen are:

  • a table and chairs or hockers,
  • a plate,
  • a cereal bowl,
  • a glass of water,
  • cup,
  • fork knife spoon,
  • dish towels,
  • a trashcan in the kitchen,
  • sandwich bags or food storage containers.

Lounge

Whether you want to host movie nights or elegant cocktail parties, you’ll need seating that suits your style yet is functional. Extra points for a sofa bed or futon – they can serve as a place for guests to sleep. There’s also no shame in grabbing something used from a friend or family member.

A coffee table is also essential in your first apartment. It’s a great place to set down a drink when hosting a party, but it’s also a way to express your personality at home.

Whether you pay for cable or not, buying a TV is a great investment. It’s not absolutely necessary, but it’s essential for hosting amazing movie nights! If you’re a movie fan, you may want to think about skipping the TV and buying a projector

When arranging your living room, don’t forget about:

  • a comfortable couch,
  • a coffee table,
  • tV.

Bathroom

Bathroom items may not require as much attention as some of the bigger purchases in your first apartment, but it’s still worth considering the style of your bathroom. It’s easy to find matching shower curtains, towels, etc., so all of your bathroom essentials will look great together.

After a long day of moving, you’re probably dying for a hot shower, so pack your toiletries (soap, shampoo, etc.)

See what else you might want to pack:

  • shower curtain,
  • bath towels,
  • towels,
  • toilet paper,
  • soap,
  • lining for the shower curtain,
  • hooks for shower curtains.
