Pregnancy is a period of joyful anticipation for the birth of a child. For nine months, a woman carries a new life under her heart, for which she is responsible. That is why, during this period, the future mother should take special care of herself and watch what she does and how she eats. This is extremely important for the proper development of the child. What should a pregnant woman avoid? Check it out below. We have prepared some information on this subject.
What a pregnant woman should not eat?
Diet is very important for a future mother. All products that a woman eats can penetrate into the child’s body. That is why there is a certain group of products that should be categorically eliminated during pregnancy. There are also some ingredients that are unnecessarily considered harmful, because in fact they have no effect on the fetus. So what should not pregnant women eat? These will undoubtedly be:
- raw meat and dairy products – they may contain substances that cause toxoplasmosis and listeriosis, leading to premature birth or damaging the nervous system of the fetus;
- trans isomers – present in highly processed or deep-fried foods. Therefore, you should avoid chips, crackers, stock cubes, ready-made concentrates for sauces and soups, fast food and all products that contain hydrogenated vegetable fat;
- mouldy cheeses – these will include all cheeses made from unpasteurised milk, such as camembert, brie, feta, gorgonzola and azure. The bacteria in them can also cause listeriosis;
- liver – is a source of retinol, which can have a toxic effect on the fetus
As for products that are better to avoid, these will certainly be sweets and colored sodas, which contain large amounts of sugar. It does not provide any nutrients and can lead to gestational diabetes, which is dangerous for the fetus. You should also avoid large amounts of coffee and untested herbal infusions – especially raspberry leaves and strawberries, as they can cause premature birth. In addition, a pregnant woman should also be careful with sprouts, which can cause food poisoning.
Alcohol and cigarettes
It seems obvious that a pregnant woman should categorically avoid alcohol throughout her pregnancy. Even a small amount of alcohol crosses the placenta to the fetus, which does not know how to metabolize such substances. If you are pregnant, you should be aware that the consumption of alcoholic beverages can cause FAS – foetal alcohol syndrome – in your child, the consequences of which you will see in the future. This includes low birth weight, handicaps, hyperactivity and facial deformities.
Tobacco products, on the other hand, adversely affect the cardiovascular system. They can also cause miscarriage or premature birth.
What should a pregnant woman not do?
Apart from maintaining a proper diet, a pregnant woman should remember to avoid certain activities. The first of these will undoubtedly be long periods of lounging in a bathtub full of hot water. It can adversely affect the fetus and even lead to miscarriage. It is also worth remembering to avoid carrying heavy shopping. Lifting heavy objects can lead to pain, bleeding and in some cases even miscarriage. You should also avoid standing with your hands up; this leads to blood circulation problems, which can in turn cause fainting.
If you are expecting a baby soon, you should also refrain from wearing high-heeled shoes. The change in the center of load can result in imbalance and back pain. It is also important to avoid stressful situations, as they may contribute to abnormal development of the baby or premature birth.
